Plan bathroom lighting without treating a lumen figure as approval

Separate mirror, general, and accent lighting while keeping product ratings and electrical safety checks outside the calculator result.

Illustrative worked example

Bathroom Lighting Calculator checkpoint

An 8.5 m² bathroom includes a 1.4 m vanity. The estimate is used only for lighting output planning, not to determine product suitability in wet locations.

Inputs used

Bathroom area8.5 m²
Vanity width1.4 m
Ambient target240 lux
Vanity lumens per metre950 lm/m

Calculator result

Ambient lumens
2,040 lm
Vanity lumens
1,330 lm
Total planned lumens
3,370 lm

Decision from this checkpoint

Use the output to compare fixture options, while treating ingress protection, zones, circuit protection, and installation rules as a separate professional/supplier check.

  • Mirror lighting should be checked for facial shadows and glare.
  • Local electrical rules are outside the calculator.

List the visual tasks first

Bathroom lighting usually supports several tasks: general movement, mirror use, shower or bath use, cleaning, and sometimes low-level night lighting. Mark the mirror, basin, shower, bath, storage, and door on a simple plan. A single central ceiling fitting may illuminate the room but still leave poor light on the face at the mirror.

Use the calculator only for planning output

A lumen estimate can help compare fixture quantities and budgets, but it does not determine whether a fitting is suitable for a particular bathroom location. Reflective tiles, dark finishes, ceiling height, diffuser losses, and fixture beam spread all affect the result you experience in the room.

Check mirror lighting for shadows and glare

Consider whether light reaches the face from the front or sides rather than only from above. Strong downlight can create shadows around the eyes and chin, while an exposed bright source in the mirror can create glare. Compare the fixture dimensions and output with the actual mirror width and mounting position.

Verify product ratings and location requirements

Bathroom electrical zones, ingress protection requirements, circuit protection, and installation rules depend on location and jurisdiction. The calculators do not evaluate those requirements. Check the selected product documentation and have the electrical design and installation reviewed by an appropriately qualified person where required.

Budget by layer and keep safety work separate

Separate the cost of general fixtures, mirror lighting, accent lighting, controls, and professional electrical work. This makes it easier to reduce decorative upgrades without cutting a required safety or installation item. Keep the final product codes and installation notes with the budget before purchasing.
