What the Gallery Wall Planner actually calculates

Rows are frame count divided by columns, rounded up. Width uses the smaller of frame count and selected columns; height uses the rounded row count, with gaps between cells. The tool assumes equal-size grid cells and does not reserve empty columns beyond the frame count. It does not arrange mixed frame sizes or center a partial row.

The calculation path

Column and row counts combine frame dimensions and consistent gaps into one overall footprint.

Inputs that can change the answer

  • Number of frames: Enter number of frames as a number; use the definition in the calculation method.
  • Columns: Enter columns as a number; use the definition in the calculation method.
  • Average frame width: Enter average frame width in m.
  • Average frame height: Enter average frame height in m.
  • Gap: Enter gap in m.

Checks that stay outside the formula

Lay frames on the floor and photograph the arrangement before transferring it to the wall.

A practical order for entering the data

  1. Enter the whole number of frames and the intended number of columns.
  2. Measure outside frame width and height, then choose a consistent gap in metres.
  3. Check the resulting grid footprint on the wall and plan how to align any incomplete final row.

Engine check using the prefilled sample

Worked example: number of frames = 8, columns = 3, average frame width = 0.35 m, average frame height = 0.45 m and gap = 0.07 m. Replace the sample wall and item dimensions with the exact section and product format involved in your layout.

Project-specific method

Worked example and purchase checks

The tool arranges a chosen number of equal-size frames into the requested column count, calculates the required rows, and adds the selected gaps to estimate the outer width and height of the group.

Illustrative worked example

How to read the result

Use the outer dimensions to tape a full-size boundary on the wall, then place paper templates inside it before making holes.

Assumptions this example makes

  • Frames use one average outer width and height.
  • Gaps are consistent between neighbouring frames.

What this calculator does not prove

  • It does not account for mixed frame sizes, hanging hardware offsets, irregular clusters, or visual weight.
  • The calculated outer box does not tell you the correct height above furniture.
Gallery outer-boundary sketchSketch is explanatory, not to scale.

Mistakes that change this result

  1. Entering artwork size instead of the frame’s outside size.
  2. Forgetting that an incomplete final row changes the visual balance.
  3. Drilling from the frame edge instead of measuring each hanging point.

Gallery Wall Planner — Questions to resolve before installation

Can I use different frame sizes?

Average dimensions give only a rough footprint. A mixed-size gallery needs an individual frame layout to avoid overlap and uneven gaps.

Why is the final row not full?

The row count rounds upward whenever the number of frames is not divisible by the column count.
